How does group therapy work? How is the time structured? Do I have to talk?
Group therapy tends to emphasize the interpersonal and interactional, whereas individual therapy focuses more on the intrapsychic. Translation : ) In groups you get to interact with others as well as discuss your relationships with others. As bonding and safety develop, you may want to ask for feedback from the group about your communication and relationship styles. In individual therapy, there is more focus on your own internal processes and individual history. Time structure: It's important to be on time so that you can hear the "check-ins" (brief sharing of yourself, your week, any pressing issue you'd like to discuss). Some group meetings will have a scheduled topic, other meetings will allow a spontaneous topic emerge. At some time after a few groups we may want to reflect and assess how we feel things are going. Do we want more of this and less of that? The group is of our design. Do I have to talk?: Feel free to talk and share as you feel comfortable. Some basic introductions during our first meeting and "check-ins" or updates during our subsequent meetings will help us get to know each other. We will work together to provide a safe environment conducive to sharing. The group is highly confidential, and this point will be revisited regularly. Everyone in the group will sign a confidentiality contract.
